Beverly’s Day Spa Continues Legacy of the Howell House

Imagine a time when everything moved a little slower. A time when people sat on their rocking-chair front porches with their neighbors in the evenings, sipping glasses of lemonade or Coca-Cola from glass bottles. A time when kids could be found playing and laughing outside until the sun set, and even later if there were fireflies to be caught. This was the precious time in history when the foundation for the Howell House was first laid. Originally built for Wylie P. Dobbs in 1906, the home passed through many owners until it finally fell into the hands of its namesake family–Luther and Mary Howell–in 1943. Both the house and the surrounding community flourished under Mary’s care, as she was committed to spread her love of learning to the youth of Woodstock. Mary worked diligently as a teacher and a missions director for the young ladies at her church, and she often used the home to host overnight retreats for the girls there. She also made use of the studio behind the home as a venue where she invited children to learn ceramics, a special talent of Mary’s that served as a witnessing tool of her abundant faith. When her husband Luther passed away in 1956, Mary stayed on in the house and had it converted into two apartments. These she shared happily with new school teachers or newlyweds in need of a place to stay. The home remained in the Howell family until 2001, when Beverly Pitts bought it as her new location for Beverly’s Day Spa.
