Howell House
Known today as the Howell House, this historic home was built circa 1906. The home was bought in 1907 by the Latimer family for grand sum of $100. Ownership passed through a couple of hands in the early 1900s until it was purchased by L.E. Howell in 1943. The house remained a part of the Howell Family until it was sold to Beverly Nix Pitts in 2001 as the new location for Beverly’s Day Spa.
Any narrative about this lovely house must include a sketch of the life of Mary Smith Howell, for her personality gave unique characteristics to the home itself and to the community surrounding it. At various times in her life, Mrs. Howell taught school, and her love of learning was evident throughout her life. She was a role-model for all young girls in the community and hosted many overnight parties and mission trips to Kentucky for the girls. One of her many talents was ceramics, and she held classes in her garage where the young kids of Woodstock could make pots and vases for Christmas gifts.
The house itself experienced a few changes under Mrs. Howell’s ownership. After the death of her husband in 1956, the house was renovated to make two apartments where lucky newly-weds or new school teachers could live with this special lady in this very special house. Mrs. Howell died in 1991, but her spirit lives on in the house and in the hearts of those who knew her in the community.
